# Case study: IYC Mega Job Fairs (2025–26), with lessons for organisers

**Why this is here.** The Indian Youth Congress (IYC) ran large job fairs in
Jaipur (Apr 2025), Delhi (Jun 2025), Patna (Jul 2025) and Delhi again (Jun 2026).
They are a well-reported example of a fair at scale. This file uses them
**only as an organising example**. NEST Collective takes no political position.
Figures marked **[IYC claim]** come from IYC itself, and we found no independent
audit of them. Desk research, checked 6 Oct 2026.

## What worked
- **Free QR registration plus walk-in.** Online sign-up through a QR code, plus registration at the venue on the day ([The Hindu, 2026 preview](https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/congress-to-organise-job-fair-on-rahul-gandhis-birthday/article71101435.ece)).
- **Scale of employers.** Roughly 100–200 employers per event [IYC claim]. The Patna floor was reported at 199 stalls ([Indian Express](https://indianexpress.com/article/political-pulse/job-promises-poll-bound-bihar-what-pursuit-of-one-look-like-10144354/)). Staffing firms such as Quess Corp brought volume alongside direct employers ([The Telegraph](https://www.telegraphindia.com/india/congress-finger-on-job-pulse-as-thousands-seek-employment-at-delhi-mega-fair-prnt/cid/2108741)). Delhi 2026 exhibitors were reported to include Flipkart, Zepto and Urban Company ([Tribune](https://www.tribuneindia.com/news/delhi/7000-candidates-get-offer-letters-at-youth-congress-job-fair-in-delhi/)).
- **Broad publicity.** Press conferences, social media with a QR call to action, hoardings and word of mouth ([The Telegraph](https://www.telegraphindia.com/india/congress-finger-on-job-pulse-as-thousands-seek-employment-at-delhi-mega-fair-prnt/cid/2108741)).
- **A promised helpline** for one month after the 2026 fair, to help with joining problems [IYC claim] ([The Hindu, 2026 preview](https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/congress-to-organise-job-fair-on-rahul-gandhis-birthday/article71101435.ece)). We found no published number or results for it.

## What went wrong
- **One global token queue.** In Delhi 2025 a candidate held token 5,395 while only about 1,000 had been called ([ThePrint](https://theprint.in/politics/so-much-unemployment-over-20000-register-for-congress-job-fair-to-mark-rahul-gandhis-birthday/2663888/)). Tokens were used again in 2026 ([ETV Bharat Hindi](https://www.etvbharat.com/hi/state/youth-congress-organized-mega-job-fair-in-delhi-on-rahul-gandhi-birthday-dls26061903642)).
- **Crowd control in Patna.** Barricades were broken and security staff had to step in ([Dainik Bhaskar](https://www.bhaskar.com/local/bihar/patna/news/chaos-at-youth-congresss-job-fair-135486087.html)).
- **Outcome numbers that grew over time.** About 3,500 Delhi 2025 offers [IYC claim] were revised to 3,391 [IYC claim] ([PTI via ThePrint, 23 Jun 2025](https://theprint.in/india/indian-youth-congress-to-organise-job-fair-in-bihar-from-july-15-25/2667940/)). A year later IYC restated the figure as about 7,000 [IYC claim] ([The Hindu, 2026 preview](https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/congress-to-organise-job-fair-on-rahul-gandhis-birthday/article71101435.ece)). We found no independent count of joinings.
- **Data-collection concerns.** Some 2026 attendees alleged the fair was a pretext for collecting data ([ETV Bharat Hindi](https://www.etvbharat.com/hi/state/youth-congress-organized-mega-job-fair-in-delhi-on-rahul-gandhi-birthday-dls26061903642)).
- **Politically framed branding.** Tying the fair to a leader's birthday and to elections drew accusations from rival parties ([The Hindu / PTI, 2026](https://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Delhi/thousands-attend-youth-congress-job-fair-on-rahul-gandhis-56th-birthday/article71121719.ece); [Dainik Bhaskar](https://www.bhaskar.com/local/bihar/patna/news/chaos-at-youth-congresss-job-fair-135486087.html)).

## The 10 lessons (use them as checks)
1. **Size the venue and entry plan to registrations; cap and slot.** Hard cap = interview seats × hours. Arrival time slots for registrants, plus a separate, capped walk-in lane. Agree barricading, marshals and a police/venue-security liaison in advance.
2. **Publish a job board before the event.** Role, openings, work location, in-hand pay, shift, minimum qualification, at least a week ahead.
3. **Pre-screen and route instead of one big queue.** Zone-specific tokens (for example technical/field, retail/logistics, graduate office), live token boards per zone, and a floor laid out by sector.
4. **Balance employers and get commitments in writing.** Staffing firms bring volume; local employers bring jobs near home. Get written roles, pay band, location and interview format, and say in advance which booths only collect CVs.
5. **Be explicit about physical and field roles.** Travel, shift length, physical demands, uniform or gear, transport or accommodation. Run an ITI/diploma track, and give women candidates commute and shift details up front.
6. **Define metrics before the event and publish them honestly.** Registered → attended → interviewed → shortlisted → written offer → joined at 30 days → still employed at 90 days. Keep internships separate.
7. **Treat candidate data as a trust issue.** Collect only job-relevant fields, show a short consent notice, share only with chosen employers, delete on a stated date, and never ask political, religious or electoral questions.
8. **Keep the event neutral; brand it around candidates.** Invite several community partners; keep speeches short.
9. **Communicate registration and walk-in status clearly.** One canonical page and a QR code that stays live, a visible status line, an update channel, an eligibility statement and a documents checklist.
10. **Plan follow-up and fraud protection.** Publish a helpline number. Contact everyone with an offer at 7, 30 and 90 days, log joining problems per employer, and tell everyone: no genuine employer asks for a fee.
